A garden suite is a self-contained second home in the backyard — kitchen, bathroom and its own entrance — used for rental income, multigenerational living, or a quiet studio or office. Since the 2022 zoning amendments, garden suites are as-of-right across Toronto — no rezoning or variance on most lots that meet the setback, size and rear or laneway access rules.
